The Sports Injury Management (SIM) curriculum offers study
for students who want careers in Athletic Training (AT). Successful completion of the
program prepares the student for the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
Certification Examination administered by the NATA Board of Certification. Several courses
required are also part of the N-12 and Non-Teaching Certification curricula in Physical
Education.
The SIM-AT Curriculum consists of the academic courses
listed within the Physical Education Non-Teacher Certification Program (see Departmental
advising sheet). Internship and clinical experiences are designed so that the student may
fulfill the 1500 hours of athletic training experience needed for graduation and the NATA
Certification Examination. The SIM-AT Curriculum is divided into Pre-Professional and
Professional Components.
The Pre-Professional Component provides the student with
basic study in the General Studies Program of the University and in basic course study and
clinical experiences in Athletic Training. Formal application is required for entrance
into the Professional Component with the number of students admitted limited. To ensure
that all interested students are given an equal opportunity to complete for the clinical
positions that are available each year, applications are evaluated using the following
criteria:
completed application submitted to the program director
by April 1st;
completion of the designated course work or equivalent
courses approved by the program director with grades of "C" or better;
strength of academic performance in the designated course
work;
minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application
(including transfer hours);
evaluation of the student's performance during the
pre-professional clinical experience;
personal interview by Program Selection Committee.
EMT certification or licensure
Students accepted into the Professional Component should be
prepared for extra expenses including books, lab fees and supplies, personal liability
insurance, and travel to and from clinical facilities. The Pre-Professional and
Professional Program requirements are separate from the requirements for admission to
candidacy within the college of Education. Other requirements may exist for NATA
Certification and are in addition to the Sport Injury Management Curriculum. Program
requirements including candidacy and retention are found on Departmental program sheets
available from advisor
Additional Departmental requirements will be listed
in HPELS advising sheets (see advisor).
