CLS 315 Research Methodology 1 cr A survey of types of research designs, types of measurement, data analysis, and application in clinical laboratory sciences. Special fee: $30.00. Taught in Fall Semester. CLS 330 Clinical Lab Analysis (W) 4 cr An introduction to analytical techniques used in clinical labs with emphasis on urine and body fluid analysis, and calculations. Special fee: $30.00. Taught in Spring Semester. CLS 340 Clinical Biochemistry 3 cr Structure and function of proteins and enzymes, human metabolism and its relationship to disease. Taught in Fall Semester. CLS 350 Clinical Parasitology, Mycology, and Virology 3 cr Study of medically important parasites, fungi, and viruses emphasizing laboratory identification and pathophysiology. Special fee: $30.00. Taught in Spring Semester. CLS 360 Clinical Immunology and Bacteriology 5 cr Introduction to immunobiology, immunochemistry and the human immune system. Concepts of the virulence of bacteria and how they impact the human host-parasite relationship. Includes a survey of serologic and other diagnostic laboratory techniques. Special fee: $45.00. Taught in Fall Semester. CLS 394 Directed Study 2-4 cr Laboratory research conducted in conjunction with faculty-directed projects. Special fee: $30.00. Taught in Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters. CLS 410 Clinical Microbiology 7 cr Advanced study in clinically important microorganisms with emphasis on laboratory isolation and identification. Special fee: $150.00. Taught in Summer Semester. CLS 420 Hematology 7 cr Advanced study of the hematopoietic system and cells in the blood including morphology in normal and disease states and study of hemostasis. Special fee: $75.00. Taught in Fall Semester. CLS 431 Clinical Chemistry and Instrumentation 7 cr Study of analytical methods used to measure clinically important ions and molecules, and the application of those measurements to diagnose and monitor diseases. Special fee: $100.00. Taught in Summer Semester. CLS 432 Immunohematology 7 cr A study of blood cell antigens and their corresponding antibodies with emphasis on their laboratory identification on blood donor/ recipient compatibility testing. Special fee: $90.00. Taught in Fall Semester. CLINICAL PRACTICA CLS 435 Introduction to Laboratory Management (W) 2 cr Principles of organization, human resource, and financial management in clinical laboratories. Taught in Spring Semester. CLS 440 Hematology Practicum 3 cr Supervised clinical practice in hospital hematology and hemostasis laboratories. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 4 weeks. CLS 441 Clinical Immunology Practicum 1 cr Supervised clinical practice in hospital immunology/immunochemistry laboratory. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 2 weeks. CLS 445 Clinical Microbiology Practicum 4 cr Supervised clinical practice in hospital microbiology laboratory. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 6 weeks. CLS 452 Immunohematology Practicum 3 cr Supervised clinical practice in hospital blood bank. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 4 weeks. CLS 454 Clinical Chemistry Practicum 4 cr Supervised clinical practice in hospital chemistry/toxicology laboratory. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 5 weeks. CLS 455 Body Fluids Practicum 1 cr Supervised clinical practice in hospital urine and body fluid analysis department. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 1.5 weeks. CLS 490 Elective Practica 1 cr Supervised clinical practice in phlebotomy, generalist environment, and an area outside the main clinical laboratory. Taught in Spring Semester. Duration: 2 weeks. Note: Clinical Laboratory Sciences students also gain experience in all aspects of blood collection and specimen processing, including phlebotomy, capillary collection, and other procedures for obtaining specimens. Hours and requirements are arranged at the clinical training sites in conjunction with practicum course schedules.
