SPA 290 Speech Improvement for the Classroom 3 cr

Survey of minor speech problems in children and adults through application of speech improvement techniques. Taught in Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.

SPA 291 Introduction to Communication Disorders 3 cr

Overview of major disorders of human communication and the role of the audiologist and speech-language pathologist in assessing and treating them. Taught in Fall, and Spring Semesters.

SPA 312 Fundamentals of Speech Science 3 cr

Study of the anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanism; physical properties of sound and their analysis with special emphasis on speech signals. Taught in Spring Semester.

SPA 313 Fundamentals of Hearing Science 3 cr

Integrated study of the anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism, quantification of sound, sound generation, and sound transmission emphasizing the role of the auditory system in the encoding and processing of simple and complex signals. Applications will be made to the clinical practice or hearing assessment. Taught in Fall Semester.

SPA 331 Normal Language Acquisition (W) 3 cr

Acquisition of communicative behavior in normal children during the first decade of life: development of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, cognition; clinical laboratory experience with young children. Prerequisite: SPA 290 or 291. Special fee: $12.00. Taught in Fall Semester.

SPA 341 Clinical Phonetics 3 cr

Transcription techniques for the analysis of speech. Includes a study of the dynamics of normal speech sound production. Prerequisite: SPA 290 or 291. Special fee: $12.00. Taught in Fall Semester.

SPA 414 Neurobiological Bases of Human Communication 3 cr

Introduction to neuroscience and clinical neurology as they apply to the processes of normal and disordered communication. Topics include neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropathologies and neuro-rehabilitation. Prerequisites: SPA 331 and 341. Taught in Spring Semester.

SPA 431 Introduction to Language Disorders 3 cr

A survey of language disorders in preschool and school-age children; assessment and intervention. Prerequisite: SPA 331. Taught in Fall Semester.

SPA 441 Introduction to Articulation and Phonological Disorders 3 cr

Study of the dynamics of disordered speech production. Techniques for the analysis and treatment of articulation and phonological disorders. Prerequisites: SPA 331 and 341. Taught in Spring Semester.

SPA 451 Introduction to Voice Disorders 3 cr

Study of normal voice production. Evaluation and management of voice disorders resulting from misuse of the vocal mechanism. Prerequisites: SPA 331 and 341. Taught in Fall Semester.

SPA 461 Introduction to Fluency Disorders (W) 3 cr

A beginning course in stuttering and related disorders, with emphasis upon symptomatology, testing, rehabilitation, and prevention. Prerequisites: SPA 331 and 341. Taught in Spring Semester.

SPA 471 Introduction to Audiological Assessment 3 cr

Disorders of hearing, audiogram interpretation, basic pure-tone, and immittance testing and principles of screening. Rationale and methods in pure-tone and speech audiometry, including masking procedures. Basic concepts in differential diagnostic procedures and test interpretation. Taught in Fall Semester.

SPA 472 Aural Rehabilitation 3 cr

A survey of the procedures involved in management of individuals with hearing loss. Prerequisite: SPA 471. Taught in Spring Semester.

SPA 480 Issues in Clinical Practicum (W) 3 cr

Introduction to the clinical setting; organizations and statutes that govern professional service; instrumentation, procedures and approaches to remediation. Observation of therapy and indirect participation as a clinical aide. Prerequisites: SPA 331 and 341. Special fee: $13.00. Taught in Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.

SPA 490 Special Topics 1-3 cr

Topics to be determined by student need and interest. Content will vary. A subtitle identifying the topic will be entered on the student’s record. May be repeated for a total of six credits. Prerequisite: Permission of department chair.

SPA 494 Directed Independent Study 1-3 cr

Independent study under the direction of a faculty member. Prerequisite: Permission of department chair.

SPA 510 Intro to Research Design 3 cr

A general presentation of research procedures. The student will learn to read and evaluate professional literature and develop a research prospectus.

SPA 521 Advanced Speech Science 3 cr

The study of physical and acoustic concepts involved in speech production and perception including instrumental measurement and analysis. Prerequisite: SPA 312 or equivalent.

SPA 522 Measurement of Language 3 cr

Measurement and quantification of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic language behavior; emphasis on assessment and analysis methodologies. Prerequisite: SPA 331 or equivalent.

SPA 531 Advanced Language Disorders 3 cr

Clinical assessment and management of language problems in the infant-toddler population. Prerequisites: SPA 431 or equivalent, and SPA 522.

SPA 541 Advanced Articulation Disorders 3 cr

Advanced study of disordered speech-sound production including functional articulation disorders, phonological processing and developmental apraxia. Includes assessment and treatment. Prerequisite: SPA 441 or equivalent.

SPA 551 Advanced Voice Disorders 3 cr

Advanced study of vocal pathology, symptomatology, etiology, and treatment. Prerequisite: SPA 451 or equivalent.

SPA 561 Advanced Fluency Disorders 3 cr

Study of theories, research, and contemporary treatment procedures in the area of dysfluency. Prerequisite: SPA 461 or equivalent.

SPA 565 Neuromotor Disorders of Communication 3 cr

Review of neuroanatomy and physiology, nature of neuromuscular pathologies, methods of assessment and rehabilitation of neuromotor disorders of speech production. Prerequisite: SPA 414 or equivalent.

SPA 566 Acquired Disorders of Language and Cognition 3 cr

Review of neuropsychology of communication; nature of acquired pathologies affecting central processes of language and cognition; methods of assessment and rehabilitation of acquired cognitive and linguistic disorders in children and adults. Prerequisite: SPA 565.

SPA 567 Medical Speech Language Pathology 2 cr

A continuation of Acquired Disorders of Language and Cognition; medical aspects of speech-language pathology including anatomy and physiology of deglutition; nature of swallowing disorders and related diseases. Methods of assessment and remediation. Prerequisite: SPA 566.

SPA 568 Cranio-Facial Anomalies and Speech-Language Disorders 2 cr

Evaluation and remediation of speech-language problems associated with cleft lip/palate and other cranio-facial differences.

SPA 570 Advanced Hearing Science 4 cr

Physical concepts related to the study of acoustics and sound measurement; anatomy and physiology of the auditory mechanism; psychoacoustics. Prerequisites: SPA 313, 471, or equivalent.

SPA 571 Advanced Procedures in Audiology 4 cr

Discussion of the practical and theoretical bases of the components of the diagnostic audiologic test battery including otoscopic examination, case history, pure-tone air and bone conduction testing, speech testing, and immittance testing as well as special tests for evaluating pseudohypacusis and cochlear versus retrocochlear site-of-lesion. Laboratory exercises are included to enable students to become familiar with test procedures. Prerequisite: SPA 471 or equivalent.

SPA 572 Hearing Aids 4 cr

A review of electro-acoustic characteristics of amplification systems for the hearing impaired; hearing-aid standards; earmolds; hearing-aid selection and verification procedures. Prerequisite: SPA 571.

SPA 573 Advanced Aural Rehabilitation 3 cr

Advanced study of concepts in the assessment and (re)habilitation of individuals with hearing loss. Covers the impact of hearing loss on the communication process. Also includes a discussion of educational and vocational needs of individuals with hearing loss, deaf culture, assistive devices and legislative mandates.

SPA 574 Advanced Hearing Aid Procedures 3 cr

An in-depth study of issues in the prescription and fitting of hearing aids and other amplification devices. Prerequisite: SPA 572.

SPA 575 Medical Audiology 3 cr

A study of the pathology of the hearing mechanism including disease processes and pathophysiology of the peripheral and central hearing systems in humans.

SPA 577 Specialized Audiological Procedures 4 cr

A study of special diagnostic procedures used in audiology including auditory brainstem response, electronystagmography, otoacoustic emissions and tests of central auditory processing. Prerequisite: SPA 571.

SPA 578 Audiology for Special Populations 3 cr

Study of assessment techniques and intervention strategies for special populations. Prerequisite: SPA 571.

SPA 585 Administration and Supervision in Communication Disorders 3 cr

Topics related to administration and supervision of Communication Disorders programs: health care delivery systems, income and expenses, billing and collecting, issues in personnel selection and retention, professional relationships, professional ethics.

SPA 588 Audiology for Speech-Language Pathologists 3 cr

Audiometric testing; audiogram interpretation and clinical and educational management of the hearing impaired. Not available for audiology majors.

SPA 589 Speech-Language Pathology for Audiologists 3 cr

A study of specific topics in speech- language pathology for audiology majors. Not available for speech pathology majors.

SPA 590 Directed Independent Research 1-3 cr

Independent research under the direction of a graduate faculty member. May be repeated. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor and graduate advisor.

SPA 592 Seminar in Communication Disorders 1-3 cr

SPA 595 Clinical Practicum in Audiology 1 cr

SPA 596 Clinical Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology 1 cr

Supervised clinical experience in speech- language pathology. May be repeated. Prerequisite: Permission of graduate advisor. Special fee: $25.00.

SPA 597 Advanced Management and Evaluation of Speech-Language Programs 3 cr

Organizing speech-language programs for quality assurance. Evaluation procedures for internal and external accountability. Required for Class A Certification. Prerequisite: Permission of department chair.

SPA 598 Clinical Externship 4 cr

Supervised clinical experience in a professional service facility. Prerequisite: Requires all course work, research, and clinical practicum preparation to be completed prior to enrollment.

SPA 599 Thesis 1-3 cr

One to three credits per semester with a maximum of three hours credit. Regular standing status required. Prerequisite: Permission of graduate advisor.
