Greek letters are an important part of everyday life on South's campus. Everywhere you look, you can see these symbols - on jerseys, t-shirts, hats, even as bumper stickers. Regardless of their combination, these Greek letters spell friendship, scholarship, leadership and service. The Greek alphabet has a special meaning for Sorority and Fraternity members. As you learn more about the Greek system at South, these letters will come to mean a lot to you too!
 
Active an initiated member of a Greek organization who is currently still enrolled
Alumna / Alumnus a member who is no longer a student
Bid a formal invitation to pledge a Sorority or Fraternity
Chapter the campus group of a national organization
Fraternity
the name informally applied to Greek-letter men's organizations
Greek a member of a Sorority or Fraternity, so called because the organizations bear Greek letter names
Initiation a formal ceremony during which a new member takes a final vow for full membership into their organization
Interfraternity Council the governing council made up of all Fraternities on campus
Legacy the child, sibling, or grandchild of an initiated member of a Greek organization
New Member a Greek woman or man who has accepted a bid, but has not yet been initiated; also known as a pledge
Panhellenic the governing council of all Sororities on campus that are chapters of any of the 26 National Panhellenic organizations; the word Panhellenic means "All Greek"
Philanthropy a service project undertaken by a Sorority or Fraternity
Pledgeship the time when a new member learns about their chapter
Potential New Member a college woman or man participating in Recruitment
Quota the number of new members that each Sorority may accept during Recruitment
Recruitment a series of events offering Potential New Members and actives the opportunity to get to know each other. Parties are given by each Sorority or Fraternity during a specific period which is scheduled and governed by Panhellenic or the Interfraternity Council; this is the primary selection period of the year for Greek organizations
