Dr. E. B. “Woody” Hannum, a scholar, humanitarian, campus leader and a steadfast champion of education at any age he strives to bring education to all people along the Gulf Coast of Alabama as associate dean of  USA’s School of Continuing Education and Special Programs. In this leadership role he oversees USA’s Interdisciplinary Studies program, which helps  non-traditional students start or return to college life. He also leads an interdisciplinary degree program for undergraduates, allowing traditional students to chart a unique course across subject boundaries.

Dr. Hannum’s professional career at USA began in 1970 in the department of history. His focus during his years as an assistant and associate professor was on British Studies. He was named as the outstanding professor in the history department and led the USA Faculty Senate. During the 1980s, he directed the British Studies Program, which included frequent research and teaching trips with students to London and the British Isles.

A native of Maine, he grew up in small-town, western New York as his Episcopal clergyman father moved the family every several years to serve a new congregation. He received his bachelor degree from the University of the South in Tennessee. Upon graduation, he considered a career as a Naval officer, but eventually decided to pursue his master’s and doctoral degrees in history from the University of South Carolina.
