PERCIPIOTM
The Art in Science Program

The PERCIPIO - Art in Science exhibit features images obtained through the pursuit of scientific research. The primary purpose of the program is perhaps best described by the title, PERCIPIO, which when translated from Latin means “to learn through the senses”. PERCIPIO was developed by the Center for Lung Biology to increase community awareness of scientific contributions made through ongoing biomedical research at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.

2003 SUMMARY

Research scientists associated with the College of Medicine contributed images obtained while performing hypothesis-driven research to PERCIPIO. From approximately 150 submitted images, 40 were selected to represent the program in an inaugural exhibit at the Mobile Museum of Art. Images were submitted by 16 research scientists including faculty, technical staff and graduate students.

In addition to the artwork contributed by research scientists, the inaugural PERCIPIO exhibit featured art created by students at Rockwell Elementary School in Daphne, Alabama. As part of the Education Outreach component of PERCIPIO, Debbie Movelle, an honors educator at Rockwell, invited PERCIPIO to give an Art in Science presentation to 4th and 5th grade honor students. In response to the presentation, the students used brightly colored acrylics on mat board to express their interpretation of Art in Science. The students’ artwork has remained on display with the PERCIPIO exhibit throughout the past year.

An opening reception was held at the Mobile Museum of Art on November 14, 2003 to celebrate the inaugural PERCIPIO exhibit. Photographs from the reception are shown on this website.

In addition to the Mobile Museum of Art, PERCIPIO has been featured at a number of other venues including the University of South Alabama main campus library,“R Place”, an art gallery/bistro in Pensacola, Florida, and the Exploreum Scientific Museum in Mobile, Alabama. The 2003 PERCIPIO exhibit returned to the University of South Alabama College of Medicine this fall where it will be permanently displayed.

2004 EXHIBITION

PERCIPIO will kick-off its Second Annual Art in Science Exhibit November 12, 2004 with an opening reception at the Mobile Museum of Art. The 2004 exhibition will be on display at the museum through January 30, 2005. As with the 2003 PERCIPIO exhibit, the 2004 collection will showcase pieces submitted to the Art in Science Gallery. This year’s collection, themed “Art Prevails”, represents data obtained from scientific experiments revealing the expected, as well as the unexpected. New features for the 2004 exhibit include original signatures by artists and images printed on canvas. In addition, a short film has been designed to coincide with the 2004 show.

In February, the “Art Prevails” exhibit will move to the University of South Alabama Library on the main campus before being displayed at the Exploreum Science Museum. Check back frequently for updates on exhibit dates and locations.

EDUCATION OUTREACH

In an effort to increase student interest in science, the Education Outreach component of PERCIPIOTM uses the vibrant, colorful images of Art in Science as tools for teaching about biological and physiological processes. In response, the students are invited to provide their individual interpretations of art in science. By doing such, the Center for Lung Biology Art in Science Program hopes to increase appreciation, interest and understanding of scientific research. Through these direct interactions with educational institutions students will be able to obtain a unique perspective on scientific research that may increase their interest in careers related to biomedical research.

If your school would like to participate in the Education Outreach, contact the Center for Lung Biology at (251) 460-7086.

PERCIPIO ONLINE GALLERY

PERCIPIO now has an online gallery (http://www.southalabama.edu/PERCIPIO). At present, the gallery features artists that were represented in the inaugural 2003 exhibit. After the 2004 “Art Prevails” exhibition debuts in November, it will be available online as well. Images along with other products such is t-shirts are available for purchase.

SUBMISSION OF ARTWORK

Anyone associated with the University of South Alabama College of Medicine is invited to submit their work to PERCIPIO. Photographic images, films and many other types of files can be included in the exhibit.

• Please include the following with your submission:

       Title of the work

Brief description of what is depicted in the image(s)

Name of artist (the person responsible for the image(s)
       Department affiliation

• All images must have been obtained through the pursuit of hypothesis-driven research. However, images can be altered from the original state through the use of photographic or other media programs. Images may not have been previously published or submitted for publication in the future.

• It is recommended that the resolution of images be 100dpi or higher. This is to preserve the integrity of the image if it is enlarged and/or printed.

• To submit artwork that does not directly conform to the above listed formats, such as 3-dimensional pieces, please contact me.

From all of the images submitted, a jury will select the specific pieces to be included in the PERCIPIO - Art in Science Exhibit. The Mobile Museum of Art Exhibit will be an annual event that will debut the PERCIPIO collection from that year. Submissions for the 2005 Exhibit are now being accepted.

Submissions can be sent via e-mail, put on CD-ROM and sent through the University of South Alabama mail system or delivered directly to MSB 3340.
