Research Interests

  • Mechanotransduction by vascular endothelial cells with flow-adaptation and flow-cessation (ischemia). Shear stress sensors on pulmonary endothelial cells. Endothelial cell reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) generation during oxygenated-ischemia in the lung with emphasis on the role of endothelial NADPH oxidase. Role of ROS in cell signaling.

  • Mechanisms of metastasis formation in the lung. Intravascular origin of pulmonary metastasis. Tumor cell-endothelial cell interactions in the pulmonary vasculature.

Research Techniques

  • Intact-organ fluorescence microscopy of subpleural endothelial cells in situ in isolated, perfused rat and mouse lungs. Use of fluorescent probes for plasma- and mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular ROS/RNS, calcium, free iron, pH, and K+-channels. Cultured bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells with or without flow-adaptation. Immunohisto- and cytochemistry, spectrofluoro- and photometry
