CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
The effect of cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) gene expression is what my research is focused towards.  Smooth muscle cells have contractile and dilatory characteristics.  It is understood that PKG regulates the VSMC relaxation/dilation phenotype via the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway.  By promoting relaxation of smooth muscle cells, PKG may play a role in regulating atherosclerotic symptoms within the vasculature.  Studying the functions of PKG on VSMC gene expression, may help clinicians and scientists to better understand the progressive narrowing and hardening of arteries that occurs over time as in coronary artery disease.  Understanding the mechanisms through which PKG acts in controlling VSMC gene expression proves to be an important factor involving the occurrence of atherosclerosis in the vascular system.
