I arrived at the University of South Alabama in January of 1989 to teach instructional design courses. We had only four masters students when I came. I taught 11 different courses my first year! That was tough work!

A few years later, the doctoral program in Instructional Design and Development was approved. In addition to our residence courses, students registered in the IDD  program now have the option to earn a masters degree entirely online . Some of these courses are also available to doctoral students. Our program now has around 100 masters and doctoral students and several full-time faculty.

My educational history includes a B.S. in Graphic Arts Technology from Florida A&M University and an M.S. and Ph. D. In Instructional Systems from Florida State U.

Some students in the IDD program and I also work together in the Online Learning Lab. The OLL provides faculty development activities and assistance to USA faculty who are, or want to become, involved with web-based instruction. It also provides great practical experiences for the graduate assistants who work there.

I'm married to a wonderful person (also on the faculty--I'll let you guess) and have two grown kids (Gallagher and Erina) of whom I am very proud.

We have interesting students from all over the world with backgrounds as diverse as art and engineering, foreign languages and computer science, education and computer science. Receiving a degree from our department is hard work. Even so, the atmosphere here is collaborative, the faculty is committed, and the facilities are up-to-date. I believe the University of South Alabama is a great place to go to school.

My research has explored the continuum between embellishment and embodiment in technology-based learning. In a general sense I am asking, "Given that technology in education is here to stay, why should we want or not want to include it in various learning environments?"
My view is that research in instructional design and development should usually be prescriptive, that is it should provide substantive advice to practitioners in education and training. If research in some way explores the embellishment/embodiment instructional continuum and has some prescriptive outcomes I am interested in it.
