Similarities
- Both are structured representations
- Both can be hierarchical and linear
- Both involve isolating and organizing concepts
- Both require training
Differences
- Only one kind of concept map is hierarchical: all outlines are.
- Recursion cannot be shown on typical outline.
- Concept maps are more visual (promote imagery)
- Concept maps can be encode verbally and imaginally; outlines only verbally.
- Concept maps can usually be scanned for "the big picture" while only short outlines can.
- Concept maps can display more interrelationships among concepts.
- Concept maps show more linking of concepts.
