Similarities

• Both are structured representations
• Both can be hierarchical and linear
• Both involve isolating and organizing concepts
• Both require training

Differences

• Only one kind of concept map is hierarchical: all outlines are.
• Recursion cannot be shown on typical outline.
• Concept maps are more visual (promote imagery)
• Concept maps can be encode verbally and imaginally; outlines only verbally.
• Concept maps can usually be scanned for "the big picture" while only short outlines can.
• Concept maps can display more interrelationships among concepts.
• Concept maps show more linking of concepts.
