Frames

Have you ever made a list of pros and cons to help you make a decision about something? If so, you have used a Frame, Type I. Frames are simply tables that help you organize information. A list of pros and cons is a table without the grid lines!

Frames help us manage large amounts of information (there is no theoretical limit to how much information they can hold) by providing a means of categorizing information according to two or more criteria. Like other strategies, they don't allow us to say anything we couldn't say another way; instead they allow us to say it more efficiently. One of the advantages of this is that we can consider all the information at once without becoming overwhelmed.

In this module, you will learn about two kinds of Frames: Type I and Type II. Both are tables, and both allow you to organize information. They are not equally suited to all content, however, and what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. You will learn what the differences are, when to use them, and under what conditions they are most effective.
