Chunking
As anyone looking for important information on an especially messy desk can attest, organizing can be an important strategy. Just as we organize things physically to be more efficient, we also organize information mentally. In general, this type of activity can be referred to as "sorting" or "chunking."
In this section we are primarily concerned with linear and spatial strategies and classification strategies. Like other types of instructional and learning strategies, they can be used in a hybrid format as well. We humans love to chunk and categorize information. This section will cover some worthwhile methods for doing so.
Objective:
- Define chunking (organizing strategies)
- Identify the broad categories of chunking strategies
- Identify the functions of chunking
- Classify concepts of taxonomies, typologies and multipurpose sorting
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various organizing strategies
