Math 542 syllabus
The course provides an introduction to topology. Topological spaces, surfaces, open and closed sets, homeomorphisms, continuity, compactness, connectedness, metric spaces, product spaces, quotient and identification spaces will be covered. If time allows, fundamental group and covering spaces will also be covered. Credit for both MA 434 and MA 542 is not allowed.
Prerequisite: C or better in MA 335 or permission of the instructor.
Objectives Students should gain:
an ability to work with axioms of topological spaces
skill at discovering and writing proofs
a familiarity with a variety of examples and counter-examples.
