Teaching Philosophy
I believe that my role as a teacher is to assist learners in the process of self-fulfillment. By helping students to attain the knowledge, skills and dispositions required for their desired vocations I help them to realize their goals. This process is more than “training” the individual; it is educating them, helping them to appreciate their education, assume responsibility for themselves and instilling in them the desire to continue to seek new learning experiences.
Research
My current research interests are pretty diverse. I collaborate with my colleagues, especially junior faculty, on a number of projects. I am involved with an ongoing study of service learning, investigations of stress, motivation, nutrition, and coaching in physical education and athletic settings and will be examining the impact of body type, composition, and weight on dynamic balance in the near future.
Outreach
My outreach activities are quite varied. I served for several years in various positions on the Board of Directors of Gulf Regional Childcare Management Agency/Early Childhood Directions. I was an Accreditation Commissioner for the NAC for a number of years, chaired the State Course of Study work group for the Course of Study Physical Education, and was a reviewer for the subsequent State Course of Study Physical Education. I was on the SBE textbook selection committee for Health and Physical Education, the SBE committee charged with selecting an ultimately developing a fitness test for Alabama school children, and was on the SBE committee that developed the current assessment guide for physical education. I have served on numerous committees and held several offices in the ASAHPERD professional organization. I have made numerous presentations for the SDE and hosted and presented in a number of workshops for the local school systems in Baldwin and Mobile counties. In Mobile county I participated in a grant to develop a dramatic arts intervention for at-risk children. I assisted the State Department and the Alabama Sports Commission with the initiation of the Wii Fit program in Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia county schools. I worked with the supervisor of Physical Education in Mobile county to develop an elective Lifetime Activity Physical Education curriculum for local middle schools. I worked with the development of youth rugby in Mobile and Baldwin counties and assisted the Mobile Youth Rugby Foundation in their initial efforts to establish youth rugby in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Finally, I worked on a number of projects examining the economic impact of Bayfest, the Moon Pie New Year’s celebration, the Senior Bowl and the GMAC/GoDaddy Bowl.
