On Wednesday, November 11th, members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), aerospace enthusiasts, and students gathered around the Shelby Hall fountain with pizza, drinks and quadcopters to celebrate the beginning of the official AIAA South Alabama Chapter.

Under the faculty advisor, Dr. Carlos Montalvo, AIAA was kickstarted at the University of South Alabama in the Fall of 2014.

Since then, AIAA has participated in volunteering opportunities with Jubilee BEST Robotics, Alabama Coastal Cleanup and Engaging Youth through Engineering (EYE), has hosted several keynote speakers for educational lectures and has toured the Airbus Defense and Space facility in Mobile, AL.

South Alabama received the official charter and as of August 2015 is recognized as an official AIAA Student Chapter as a part of the AIAA Greater Huntsville Section.

AIAA aims to branch out to aerospace industry in Mobile to foster an environment for aerospace to flourish and grow to be an influential part of Mobile's culture. Through partnerships with aerospace industry, AIAA hopes to engage students and prepare them for future careers, as well as enrich the local industry.

Addition by Dr. Carlos Montalvo:

During the celebration a group photo was taken as can be seen above. The plan was to use our newly purchased research grade quadcopter to take an aerial photo. Unfortunately, I forgot to increase the settings on the resolution so the photo came out blurry. Still, it's a pretty cool photo.
