| Introduction |
| |
| The goals of the facility are to: |
|
- Develop genetically altered mice at a cost below that required for individual or commercial preparation
- Serve as a repository for mouse lines
- Serve as a resource for information/methodology/reagents
- Educate faculty, staff and students in the derivation/utilization of mouse models in biomedical research
|
| |
| The Transgenic Animal/ES Cell facility, as it's primary purpose, provides centralized instrumentation and expertise in the generation, breeding and analysis of transgenic animals in support of research initiated by University of South Alabama investigators. The facility produces transgenic mice by microinjecting DNA provided by the investigator into fertilized mouse eggs and chimeric mice by microinjecting embryonic stem (ES) cells into mouse blastocysts. Investigators must have an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved animal protocol before submitting DNA or ES cell samples to the facility. Animal breeding and husbandry are provided by the animal vivarium located within the Department of Comparative Medicine. |

| |
Education |
| |
The facility provides three educational opportunities for faculty, staff and students: |
| |
- Series of college wide seminars
- Mouse Molecular Genetics workshops
- Graduate level course (3 credit hour course entitled "Mouse Models in Biomedical Research")
|
| |
| Results |
Color printouts of analyzed chromatograms are provided for each successful reaction. Sequencing results are stored on diskettes. Typically sequences of 500 to 700 accurate bases can be obtained from clean DNA templates. |
