Scholarship Recipients
Class of 2011

Medical Alumni Scholarships are awarded to entering freshmen students based on merit and need. The Admissions Committee or its designee will recommend recipients each year to the Alumni Association Executive Committee. This endowment fund was established in 1986 with money contributed by alumni and other sources. Each year since then, alumni contribute to the endowment base for these scholarships. Only interest from the endowment may be used for awards and the number of recipients each year depends upon the accrued amount. Scholarship recipients should realize that they have a responsibility to contribute to the base fund at a time which is appropriate to each recipient. By this act, an assurance of a perpetual growing medical alumni scholarship fund will be realized.

The Clyde G. "Sid" Huggins Scholarship was established in 1997 and awarded to a rising senior student who is committed to family practice as a career. This scholarship was established by an alumnus in honor of Dr. Huggins, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and former Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. The source of funding is the Medical Alumni Endowment Fund and the selection is made by a committee of three: Chairman of the Department of Family Practice, Vice-Chairman of Family Practice and Dr. Ellis Allen, alumnus of the College of Medicine.

The Christian L. Grinaker Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997 in memoriam for an alumnus from the Class of 1996. The source of funding is the Medical Alumni Endowment Fund and the Scholarship Committee makes the recipient selection based on the requirements established by members of the Class of 1996.

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and encourage medical students toward excellence in the quality of care rendered to their patients, particularly in the field of oncology. Students who have succeeded despite physical disabilities are urged to apply. Recipient selection is made by the Scholarship Committee.

The Les Sockwell Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by family and friends in memory of this alumnus of the Class of 1999. The source of funding is the Medical Alumni Endowment Fund and the scholarship is awarded to a rising senior interested in Med/Peds or internal medicine or pediatrics as a career.

The Medical Alumni Leadership Award is selected by vote of the senior class to be awarded to the senior who has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities.

The Michael Moore Memorial Award for outstanding student in Gross Anatomy was established by the Class of 2001 with perpetual acknowledgment in his name with a scholarship to be established at a later time.

A Need for Scholarships

As the cost of medical education continues to rise and national/state funding decreases, support from our membership for scholarship opportunities is vital. According to national statistics, our graduates are below the national norm for debt; however, the latest financial aid figures indicate USA graduates have an average outstanding debt of $140,000 to $160,000. This is a significant increase from five years ago when seniors started their residency with an average debt of $80,000 to $100,000.

The Medical Alumni Association recognizes the need for scholarships and is committed to increasing their endowment fund. This year the association made a $50,000 deposit (including matching dollars from the University) to this account. If you are interested in contributing to the Medical Alumni Scholarship Endowment or would like information on how to establish a new scholarship, please contact the Medical Alumni Office or Mr. Travis Grantham, Medical Development (251) 460-7275 tgrantham@usouthal.edu . Gifts to endowed scholarships are tax-deductible and the University provides matching funds for alumni donations.

Investment in endowed scholarships is essential to the College’s future and our ability to recruit the best and brightest student. It is the best investment you will ever make. This page will feature scholarship recipients and background information on the award.
