Neurology House Officer
PGY II - PGY III
PGY II
 
Job Duties
 
Cognitive Clinical Management: The resident performs and documents history, physical and neurological examinations on inpatients and outpatients. The resident develops differential diagnoses, creates a problem list and documents initial plan of care. Hospital orders requests for neurodiagnostic procedures and the interpretation of routine diagnostic studies are done under the supervision of the attending neurologist. The resident documents daily progress, writes routine daily orders and evaluates acute neurological problems upon the request of other physicians, again under the supervision of the attending neurologist. The resident obtains informed consent for procedures in PGY II scope of practice, requests appropriate consultation for diagnostic studies and/or evaluations by other medical services, request physical/rehabilitation therapy, specialized nursing care and social services. The resident participates in discharge planning, dictates discharge summaries and in conjunction with the attending neurologist informs the patient and family of the neurological diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. The resident is responsible for weekend and night-time calls, but not to exceed more than every fourth night.
 
Clinical Non-Invasive Management: The resident performs diagnostic physical evaluations as warranted, such as a rectal exam.
 
Clinical Invasive Management: The resident under the supervision of an upper level resident or attending neurology staff performs lumbar punctures, nasal gastric intubation and the administration of intravenous medications, where deemed necessary, usually steroids, sedation or anticonvulsants.

The resident obtains informed consent for procedures in PGY III scope of practice, requests appropriate consultation for diagnostic studies and/or evaluations by other medical services, request physical/rehabilitation therapy, specialized nursing care and social services. The resident participates in discharge planning, dictates discharge summaries and in conjunction with the attending neurologist informs the patient and family of the neurological diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. During the PGY III year, the resident being rotation through procedure oriented services, electroencephalography, electromyography and nerve conduction studies and neural surgery. The resident is responsible for weekend and night-time calls, but not to exceed more than every fourth
