Welcome Back Comrades

Welcome back to USA for the 2007 Spring Semester! Let's make it a great semester for everyone and just to get things rolling here is some great news: COC is very pleased to announce that USA has finally completed the Humanities Bathroom renovation projects which we have pushed for years. The bathrooms are super sharp looking! The handicapped facilities are impressive with lowered sinks, hand soap dispensers (which actually contain soap), mirrors, and the addition of one completely accessible stall in every bathroom. The stall is far wider than before and has new grab bars and a properly "heighted" toilette. NOTICE!--there might be small problem. Read below.

Meetings

The EC (President, Paul McGowan, [Temp Vice President] Staci Balsan, Financial Director, Pandy Kensler) are meeting this coming Wednesday to set the time for our next general member meeting of the COC. We will email you the information on the time, day, and place just as soon as we make the determination. If you would like to attend this meeting please reply to this email and we will give you all the details.

. Humanities Doors

an image for the hadicapped symbolThe Humanities Building's doors appear to still be remaining stubbornly un-automated, but we have been assured by the Dean's office that the equipment is on order and will be installed this semester. . Are There Volunteers Out There? We need a member who is in a powered wheelchair to try and negotiate the hard turn into the renovated bathrooms to test if the space is wide enough for a large powered chair. Please write us back with your findings. If the bathrooms are still not accessible for these larger chairs I will certainly appeal to the Dean under Title III of the ADA code to make at least one bathroom in each facility accessible.

Push-Plate Dilemmas

The Student Center doors have been automated for well over eight months and this is great, however, the plates to operate the doors are chronically broken. To resolve this dilemma we have approached Dr. Dale Adams to take it up with David (the SC manager) and thankfully it was addressed at the weekly admin meeting. We believe they will be installing new types of batteries into the plates, let's hope this issue is resolved. Thanks for all the tips on this problem

 World Wide Web Wows

An image of a keyboard to represent the use of the world wide webThe new COC website is under construction and will be, among many other things, section 508 compliant (for the blind and visually impaired) as well as serving as an e-commerce website for our members and friends. COC membership registration will occur online, all dues (if the EC determines we need dues), corporate donations, and product sales will go through this website and the money will be deposited directly into the COC account via PAYPAL. Three CIS students are currently working on the site when this newsletter was being written. We have a planning meeting every Tuesday at the Daily Grind at 4:30 PM, you are most welcome to come out and help with this project!
