Students Working Against Tobacco

(S.W.A.T.)  

Murphy, Vigor and Satsuma High School Students have formed peer helper groups to teach elementary and middle school students about the dangers of tobacco.  They are also making there voices heard in local governments, advocating for a tobacco free Mobile.

 

Murphy S.W.A.T. Students at Mobile City Council Meeting to promote a higher tax on all tobacco products to reduce youth tobacco use.

 

Alabama Youth Summit February2003

Murphy, Vigor and Satsuma High S.W.A.T. students went on a field trip to the Alabama Youth Summit in Montgomery to learn about tobacco advocacy.

 

Murphy S.W.A.T. students participate in WABB Teen Talk Radio.

 

Murphy S.W.A.T. visits Hankins and St.Pius Middle School.  With interactive activities, they illustrate the hazards of tobacco use.

The hand held smoker illustrates the amount of tar in just one cigarette and the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Lung tissue samples illustrate tobacco's deadly effects on the lungs. Lung cancer and emphysema samples are shown to the students.

 

Mobile Middle School students participate in Murphy High and School of Math and Science assembly with Patrick Reynolds to learn about youth tobacco and advertising. 

 2003 Summer Peer Helper Training.  Murphy, Satsuma and Vigor High School students attend a 3 day training at Murphy High School and Camp Beckwith.

Students learn about the dangers of tobacco, anti-tobacco advocacy issues, peer helping and presentations skills.

Students learn about the physical consequences of tobacco use and all the parts of the body that it effects.

Leadership and communication skills were the focus of Camp Beckwith's Challenge by Choice Course.

 

Kick Butts Day April 2003

Murphy S.W.A.T., Providence Hospital and the Legacy Foundation's TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use) and NOT (Not on Tobacco) participants encourage youth and adults at the Bel-Air Mall to take the Tobacco Free Pledge.

Tobacco:  Use It in a Sacred Way

The Coalition for a Tobacco Free Mobile provided the Native American Indians with anti-tobacco literature to make aware of the physical consequences of the Non-traditional use of tobacco.

 

Woodcock Elementary School Participates In The National

KICK BUTTS DAY 2000!

Fifth graders at Woodcock Elementary used straws to simulate the labored breathing a smoker experiences. Kindergarten students participated in an "ugly face" activity making their best ugly face at the damage tobacco does to the body.
