Resolution Honoring the Accomplishments and Memory of
Mayer Mitchell

 

WHEREAS, Mayer Mitchell served as an extraordinary supporter and leader of the University of South Alabama, including 32 years on the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Chair of the Endowment and Investments Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee, and the Health Affairs Committee, and

WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell’s support and leadership has extended to the greater Mobile community, the state of Alabama, and the nation, and included the Alabama Power Company, Altus Bank, AmSouth Bank, the Anti-Defamation League, the Archives of American Art, Bishop State Community College, Congregation Ahavas Chesed, the Leukemia Society of America, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mobile Area United Way, the Mobile County Real Estate Association, the Mobile Federation of Jewish Charities, the Mobile Jewish Welfare Fund, and The Banc Corporation, and

WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell and his family’s visionary philanthropic support of the University of South Alabama has included over $36.6 million in total contributions, constituting the greatest single family gift to any university in Alabama, and

WHEREAS, The USA Board of Trustees has resolved to name the Mitchell Cancer Institute, the Mitchell College of Business, and the Mitchell Center sports arena in recognition of the Mitchell family’s generosity to the University of South Alabama, and

WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell has received numerous honors and awards, including Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) from the University of South Alabama, the USA National Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award, the Jewish Welfare Fund’s Man of the Year award, the Mobile County Realtor of the Year, as well as high honors from the Boys Club of Mobile, Bishop State Community College, the University of Rochester, the New Orleans chapter of Hadassah, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the Mobile Kiwanis Club, and the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the USA Faculty Senate expresses its deep appreciation and gratitude for the extraordinary friendship, leadership, and support that Mayer Mitchell has shown toward both the University and the community at large, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the USA Faculty Senate, on behalf of the entire faculty of the University, conveys its deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mayer Mitchell.
