Nationally Competitive Scholarships and Fellowships

The scholarships (undergraduate) and fellowships (post-graduate) listed here are some of the most prestigious scholarships and fellowships available to students at the University of South Alabama. Although the requirements for each program vary, in general students must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher. The application process takes several months to complete. Students interested in these programs must contact the appropriate advisor (listed below) at least nine months in advance of the posted deadline, and preferably much earlier than that. Campus deadlines are several months earlier than the program deadlines.

Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program

For sophomores majoring in biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education. 

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Early February
Up to three years of study leading to a career in government or other public service. Students apply in their junior year. 

Humanity In Action Fellowship
Early January
Month-long summer human rights program for current undergraduates and recent graduates. 

Morris K. Udall Scholarship
Early March
For sophomores or juniors with career plans related to environmental public policy or Native American and Alaska Native undergraduates interested in health care and tribal public policy. 

Public Policy and International Affairs Program
Fall
Prepares undergraduates for graduate study in public policy and international affairs; apply in junior year. 

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship
Early February
Undergraduate fellowship for sophomores pursuing degrees in international studies and interested in careers in the foreign service. 

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Scholarship

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program

For undergraduates of limited financial means to study abroad. 

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship

Up to $20,000 for one year to study abroad in areas critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in traditional study abroad programs. 

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Phi Kappa Phi

U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

Three years of study of science, mathematics, engineering or behavioral and social sciences, leading to Ph.D. 

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation

Supports undergraduate and graduate students in STEM disciplines to increase number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.  Includes employment following graduation.


ABROAD

David L. Boren Graduate Fellowship

For study of languages, cultures, and regions critical to U.S. security. Recipients must seek employment with a government agency at the end of the fellowship period. 

Fulbright Graduate Student Program

One year of study in over 140 foreign countries, either working on a specific proposed project (a Full Grant) or teaching English (Teaching Grant).
