Dr. Elizabeth Emery to Lecture at Social Sciences and Humanities Colloquium
Posted on February 24, 2014
Dr. Elizabeth Emery, professor of French at Montclair State University in New Jersey, will present two lectures at USA on March 10 for the Social Sciences and Humanities Colloquium, a lecture series in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Emery, who teaches medieval and 19th Century French literature and culture, will speak first at 3:30 p.m. in Room 122 of the Humanities Building. In her talk, “Bayou Naturalism,” she will demonstrate the aesthetic and philosophic debt that a certain subset of reality-based television programs owes to the naturalist project of French writer Emile Zola in novels such as L’Assommoir, Germinal, and LaTerre.
At 7 p.m., a lecture and reception, co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the department of foreign languages and literatures, the International Studies program and the Alliance of Francaise de Mobile, will be held at the Faculty Club. Emery will speak on “Une Collectionneuse in the Era of Male Collecting: Clemence d’Ennery and her Paris Museum of Asian Art.” The event is free and open to the public.
Emery is the author of several books, including “Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum (1881-1914: Privacy, Publicity, and Personality.” Her research interests include medieval and 19th Century French literature and cultural studies, the reception of medieval art, architecture, and literature in 19th Century and 20th Century Europe and America, early photojournalism, celebrity interviews, and European and American writer house museums.
