Kimberly Williams Pettway, an instructor of social work in the department of sociology, anthropology and social work, has been appointed as director of the University of South Alabama’s Center for Academic Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.

Kimberly Williams Pettway will begin a one-year appointment as director of the University of South Alabama’s Center for Academic Service-Learning and Civic Engagement on Aug. 1.

Pettway, a native of Mobile, is currently an instructor of social work in the department of sociology, anthropology and social work.

The center is a source for getting students involved in the community through a variety of service-learning activities while providing them with experiences outside the classroom. Past CASLCE projects have included the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Higher Education Day with legislators in Montgomery and One Day Without Shoes, which raises awareness of the millions of people worldwide who can’t afford footwear. Community engagement by faculty, staff and students is one of five institutional priorities at the University.

Pettway earned master’s degrees in both criminal justice and social work from the University of Alabama. She had “a long and successful career within the Alabama Department of Human Resources, Child Welfare Office in Mobile,” according to Dr. Angela Coleman, associate vice president for institutional effectiveness, who announced Pettway’s appointment. “Further, she has strong community ties through her active work on local boards and with many civic and nonprofit associations.”

The CASLCE office is located inside the USA Student Center, Suite 240. For more information, call (251) 460-6141, or visit https://www.southalabama.edu/centers/caslce/index.html.
