Qualifications: M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Drama or Theatre. The candidate will be a goal-oriented fine arts advocate for the Department of Dramatic Arts, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University of South Alabama. The candidate will show evidence of effective administrative vision, strong interpersonal skills, excellence in teaching and service, and leadership in the areas of recruitment and curriculum development for a growing department. The chair will be expected to build on the department’s current strengths, to provide vision and creative leadership, to advance the department’s education and creative missions, and to foster each of its B.A. and B.F.A. programs.
Responsibilities: Teach theatre history and direct plays. Additional teaching in other areas, depending on strengths of candidate – music theatre, text analysis, directing, acting. Contribute to the scholarly advancement of the field through research and/or creative activities. Serve on college and university committees.
The Institution: Located in a metropolitan area of 500,000, the University of South Alabama offers educational opportunities for the residents of Mobile and the surrounding northern Gulf Coast region. With over 15,000 students, USA is one of the fastest growing universities in Alabama and offers many diverse and nationally recognized programs. The Department of Dramatic Arts is a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences and has become one of the most respected collegiate undergraduate theatre programs in the region. The faculty of five full-time and five adjunct include members of AEA, SAG/AFTRA, S.D.C. and are active with the Southeastern Theatre Conference and KCACTF.
With a state-of-the-art performance center, the Department of Dramatic Arts is able to serve many students with a broadly conceived curriculum awarding both B.A. and B.F.A. degrees. Students working towards a B.F.A. can choose a concentration in Performance, Theatre Design and Technology, or Music Theatre. The department also provides certification testing for students with both the S.A.F.D. and D.A.I. B.F.A. students are required to complete summer professional internships in well-known venues across the country.
