PCS (Professional Component Standing)

Note: Students must obtain Professional Component Standing (PCS) before they can enroll in any 300-level mechanical engineering course.  They must now apply for this change in standing either the semester they will complete the courses below or the next semester after.  A new application is now available in the office or online.  PCS Application

All departments in the College of Engineering require Professional Component Standing (PCS) for all 300- and 400-level courses. The Mechanical Engineering requirement are listed below.  PCS is awarded by the department chair when the student does the following:

1. Completes a required set of fundamental courses:
    a) EH 101 and EH 102 (English Composition)
    b) MA 126 and MA 126 (Calculus I and II)
    c) CH 131 (Chemistry I)

2. Has at least a 2.00 GPA (and a C-grade minimum in all EG courses or "C" level competency for certain departmentally specified courses taken at the University of South Alabama; and has at least a 2.00 GPA overall at the University of South Alabama.

3. Students who fail to maintain PCS criteria will lose PCS and may be required to take or repeat appropriate courses as specified by the department chair to correct their deficiencies and may not be permitted to continue in the 300- and 400-level engineering courses.
