| Before
he joined the
Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of South Alabama as
Professor and Chairman in 1995, Dr. Engin was Professor of Engineering Mechanics at the Ohio State
University. He received his B. S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State
University in 1965, M. S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the
University of Michigan in 1966 and 1968, respectively. He worked for two years
as a Research Engineer at the Highway Safety Research Institute of the
University of Michigan and one year as an Assistant Professor at the Middle
East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. He accepted an Assistant Professor
position at The Ohio State University in 1971; he was promoted to Associate
Professor in 1974 and to Full Professor in 1977. In 1995, he left Ohio State
with Professor Emeritus title and accepted the Chairman position and served in
that capacity for eight years. He was an United Nations Consultant
to Turkish universities in the summers of 1977, 1980, 1982 and UNESCO Consultant
in the summer of 1979. He received the Ervin G. Bailey Award for Meritorious
Achievement in 1974, and OSU Lumley Award in 1982. In 1978 he was honored by
the Ohio House of Representative Certificate of Commendation. In 1977 he
received the Best Paper Award of the American Society of Engineering Education;
in 1985 he received the Borelli Award of the American Society of Biomechanics
and in 1992, 1994, and 1996 he received the ASME Certificates for Outstanding
Contribution to the technical program of the First, Second, and Third Biennial
European Joint Conferences on Engineering Systems and Design (ESDA). In the
summer of 1998 he organized and directed the first Healthcare Engineering
Symposium in Berlin, Germany. For this effort, Dr. Engin received the
Outstanding Service Award of the Society for Design and Process Science
(SDPS). Two years later, i.e., in the summer of 2000, he received the
same award of SDPS at the Fifth Biennial World Conference on Integrated Design
and Process Technology (IDPT) in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Engin is also
recipient of Phi Kappa Phi Scholar of the Year award (1999) and the Best
Faculty Member award (1998) of the Council of International Students
Organizations of the University of South Alabama. Listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's
Who in America, Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in Technology Today,
American Men and Women of Science, Dictionary of International Biography,
Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, and Who's Who in Turkey. He is a
member of the American Academy of Mechanics (Founding member), American Society
of Biomechanics (Charter Member), American Society of Mechanical Engineering
(Fellow), International Society of Biomechanics, Society for Design and Process
Science (Founding Member, Fellow), Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, and Theta Tau
(Honorary Member). He has authored over 200 scientific papers, invited book chapters, and technical reports in the fields of Biomechanics and Mechanics. Professor Engin served for six years as the U. S. Editor-in-Chief of Technology and Health Care Journal. He has also presented invited lectures and seminars at several universities in the USA and at institutions in Canada, England, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Switzerland, TR Northern Cyprus, and Turkey. |
