THE MASTER’S PROGRAM - COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

Effective with the Fall semester 2008, a student's thesis defense will also serve as the comprehensive exam. A successful defense of thesis will be deemed to satisfy the comprehensive examination requirement. There will be no written comprehensive exam required for MSME-thesis option students.

The written comprehensive examination is required of all MSME-coursework option and MSME-project option students.  Students must select one subject from each of the following four areas:

  • Mathematics: Applicable Mathematics I and II
  • Solid Mechanics: Finite Element Analysis, Advanced Engineering Dynamics, Advanced Vibrations, Applied Elasticity
  • Fluid Mechanics: Advanced Fluid Mechanics, Compressible Fluid Flow
  • Thermal Sciences: Conduction Heat Transfer, Classical Thermodynamics

The comprehensive examination is given twice a year in the fall and spring.  Students will have two opportunities to pass the comprehensive examination.

Students failing this examination may try a second time not sooner than 12 weeks after the first attempt. Students failing the second time will be academically dismissed from the program.
