THE
MASTER’S PROGRAM - COMPREHENSIVE
EXAMINATION
Effective with the Fall semester 2008, a student's thesis
defense will also serve as the comprehensive exam. A successful defense
of thesis will be deemed to satisfy the comprehensive examination requirement.
There will be no written comprehensive exam required for MSME-thesis option
students.
The written comprehensive examination is required of all MSME-coursework option
and MSME-project option students.
Students must select one subject from each of the following four areas:
Mathematics: Applicable Mathematics I and II
Solid Mechanics: Finite Element Analysis, Advanced Engineering Dynamics,
Advanced Vibrations, Applied Elasticity
Fluid Mechanics: Advanced Fluid Mechanics, Compressible Fluid Flow
Thermal Sciences: Conduction Heat Transfer, Classical Thermodynamics
The
comprehensive examination is given
twice a year in the fall and
spring.
Students will have two
opportunities to pass the
comprehensive examination.
Students
failing this examination may try a
second time not sooner than 12
weeks after the first attempt.
Students failing the second time
will be academically dismissed
from the program.
