 Requesting a New DS-2019

Please present your current visa document (DS-2019), I-94 card, passport and all other supporting documentation when requesting a new visa document.

To return to the United States after travel abroad,
you generally need the following documents:

  1. A passport that is valid beyond the date of your intended reentry into the U.S.
  2. A visa stamp that will be valid at the time you reenter the U.S.
  3. A valid DS-2019 with an ending date later than the date you plan to reenter the U.S. (If you will need to apply for a new visa stamp to reenter the U.S., you should request a new visa document.)

PLEASE consult our section on "Travel Abroad and Reentry" for additional information.

PLEASE check to see if you need a visitor's visa to enter other countries by contacting the appropriate embassy in Washington, D.C. or by consulting an embassy's web site.

Is your visa stamp still valid?

1. If you have a valid visa stamp in your passport, check the issue date of your DS-2019. You will find the date to the right of the signature of the person who issued your document. If you plan to reenter the U.S. more than 1 year AFTER your document's issue date, then you need to request that your current document be revalidated for travel.
2. If your visa stamp has expired, then you need a new visa document and you must provide updated financial funding documentation (bank statement, departmental support letter, etc.). A letter from your academic/program advisor confirming you are currently employed and meeting all program requirements will be necessary.
