The University of South Alabama Mitchell Scholars Program, through the beneficence of Abraham Mitchell, offers extraordinary opportunities to pursue a challenging program of scholarly and research activities at the University of South Alabama Mitchell College of Business. The program is intended to enable students to develop their fullest intellectual and creative potential and to develop and foster stewardship and civic responsibility. USA Mitchell Scholars will have an enriched undergraduate experience and will be exceptional candidates for graduate and professional schools and the global work force after graduation.

Abraham and Mayer Mitchell endowed the University of South Alabama College of Business in 1999 to position the College to enter the twenty-first century with the resources needed to continue to strive towards excellence in teaching, research, and service. The College was renamed the Mitchell College of Business to signify their extraordinary contribution to the future of business education at the University of South Alabama .

Program Description and Information

The Mitchell Scholars Program will include all majors in the College of Business and Management Studies. A cornerstone of the program is that each student will be assigned a faculty mentor (chosen from the student's major department) who will direct the student through the research and scholarly experience that will culminate in an honors research thesis with the goal of producing a peer-reviewed publication or creative work. Mentors will be the most outstanding faculty in the College.

Scholarships

Students selected for the Mitchell Scholars Program will receive a scholarship for $8,000 per year ($4,000 per semester).

Qualifications for Consideration for the Mitchell Scholars Program

•	Minimum 28 ACT Composite (or comparable SAT scores),
•	Minimum 3.5 high school grade-point average (as computed by the University of South Alabama ),
•	Preference to Mobile County and State of Alabama Residents,
•	Students must major in Business.

Procedure to Apply for the Mitchell Scholars Program

Deadline is February 1st

•	Complete an application for admission to the University of South Alabama and submit it to the Office of Admissions with the $25 non-refundable processing fee. Students must indicate they wish to major in the Mitchell College of Business on their application for admission.
•	Request your school counselor to mail an official copy of your high school transcript to the Office of Admissions.
•	Request your official ACT or SAT results to be mailed to the Office of Admissions.
•	Participate in an interview if selected for final consideration .

* Students who meet the minimum qualification listed above and who have been admitted to the University by February 1 of the senior year of high school will be automatically considered for the Mitchell Scholarship Program.

Qualifications to Maintain Status as a Mitchell Scholar

•	Complete a minimum of 32 semester hours each academic year.
•	Participate in community service projects in collaboration with faculty mentor.
•	Participate in research projects with a faculty member culminating with the senior research project.
•	Apply for national scholarship programs (e.g. Fulbright, Rhodes, Eisenhower, etc.).
•	Maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 after the freshman year, 3.25 after the sophomore year, and 3.5 after the junior year.
•	Students will be annually evaluated.
•	Students who change their major from business to another college will forfeit their scholarship.

Benefits of Participating in the Mitchell Scholars Program

•	Mitchell Scholars will receive a four year $8,000 per year scholarship.
•	Each Mitchell Scholar will be mentored by a member of the USA Mitchell College of Business faculty, thereby establishing a four-year one-to-one academic relationship with a faculty mentor.
•	Mitchell Scholars will participate in scholarly research projects with their faculty mentors during their undergraduate careers.
•	Mitchell Scholars will participate in community service projects in conjunction with their faculty mentors.
•	Mitchell Scholars will have priority in registration.
•	Mitchell Scholars will participate in an annual Research Day to present their academic project.
•	Mitchell Scholars will be encouraged to apply for national or international scholarships (e.g. Fulbright, Rhodes , etc.).
