Faculty Senate Resolution
Vacation Policy

Whereas
the University of South Alabama 12 month faculty do not currently earn vacation leave
and
Whereas other Alabama Universities have already implemented Vacation policies for 12 month
faculty and
Whereas the University of South Alabama Faculty are equally deserving of this benefit and
Whereas the schedules and responsibilities of the 12 month faculty in the colleges of Allied
Health, Library, and Medicine do not follow the academic calendar,
Be it Resolved that the USA Faculty Senate recommends the implementation of a Faculty
Vacation policy for 12 month faculty in the colleges of Allied Health, Library, and Medicine with
the following provisions:
- Vacation will accrue for 12 month faculty at a rate of 1.67 days per month of
service.
- Vacation leave can accumulate up to 40 days, vacation over 40 days can continue to
accrue but must be taken within the fiscal year of accumulation.
- At retirement or upon leaving the institution, faculty will receive a cash benefit equal to
the amount of unused vacation time with a maximum of 40 days.
- Vacation leave for the first year of implementation will consist of 20 days to be used
within that year. These days can not be used for accrual. During this first year, official
vacation leave will accrue and will be applied in the second year following implementation
of the vacation policy.
- Faculty are not eligible for vacation during times
that conflict with their teaching or clinical responsibilities, unless specific arrangements for appropriate coverage of teaching and clinical responsibilities
are approved by the Chair and Dean, in advance of the vacation leave.
- Periods when the University is officially closed will not count as
vacation.
- The responsibility for scheduling and documenting vacation time rests with the individual faculty member and their Department
chair.
