Our laboratories are accredited by the Colleges of American Pathologists,
CLIA and the State of Alabama. The laboratories are staffed by
certified professionals with long term service.
How are we different? We are an academic team
and uphold high standards as scientists and our not-for-profit
organization permits us not to limit the number of
cells studied or the number of differential diagnostic techniques
used.
We offer genetic counseling at no extra cost in the event that
our laboratories discover an abnormality.
Our team of specialists includes four Board Certified Medical Geneticists and
an Onco-Cytogeneticist.
Whenever possible, please call our specialist before you
order chromosome analysis. Context specific studies are
best.
How are chromosome studies performed?
Chromosome studies are usually performed on dividing
cells. When the cells divide, the chromosomes become
visible and can be viewed with a microscope. To perform a chromosome
analysis, patient cells are cultured in the laboratory.
The dividing cells are harvested and placed on microscope slides.
The chromosomes in the dividing cells are stained and analyzed
at the microscope by a cytogenetic technologist and Board Certified
Clinical Cytogeneticist. A computer aided system expedites the
preparation of karotypes (Chromosomes arranged in pairs by size,
shape, and staining pattern).
When are chromosome studies needed?
- Infertility
- Low sperm count
- Multiple miscarriages
- Intrauterine growth retardation
- Failure to thrive in a baby
- Birth Defects
- Abnormal sexual development
- Congenital malformations
- Developmental delay or mental retardation
- Family History of the above
- Cancer - Neoplasia - Leukemia
- For prenatal diagnosis
- Advanced maternal age
- Abnormal triple screen
