Pregnancy Risks and Advanced Maternal Age

Pregnancy Risks and Advanced Maternal Age : Women approaching or beyond the age of 35 have a greater chance than younger women of having a baby with a chromosome abnormality. Some of the most common abnomalities are Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18 and Klinefelter Syndrome.

Our team recommends ...

  • Family History, Genetic Counseling and Pedigree for risk assessment

  • (It can be given by telephone.)
  • All pregnant women near the age of 35 should be offered diagnostic prenatal studies. (Seek information as soon as possible.)
  • Triple screen and AFP screening studies are not sufficient to resolve concerns about chromosome defects in a fetus.  Diagnostic and not screening studies are necessary, in this instance, amniocentesis, high resolution ultrasound, chromosome studies and AFP.  This is true for all women, regardless of age.

  • If you are approaching or are over 35 and are or plan to be pregnant, you should be offered prenatal diagnostic studies and not screening only.
