Pregnancy Risks and Advanced Maternal Age : Women approaching or beyond
the age of 35 have a greater chance than younger women of having
a baby with a chromosome abnormality. Some of the most common
abnomalities are Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 13, Trisomy
18 and Klinefelter Syndrome.
Our team recommends ...
Family History, Genetic Counseling and Pedigree for risk assessment
(It can be given by telephone.)
All pregnant women near the age of 35 should be offered diagnostic prenatal
studies. (Seek information as soon as possible.)
Triple screen and AFP screening studies are not sufficient to resolve concerns
about chromosome defects in a fetus. Diagnostic and not screening
studies are necessary, in this instance, amniocentesis, high resolution
ultrasound, chromosome studies and AFP. This is true for all women,
regardless of age.
If you are approaching or are over 35 and are or plan to be pregnant,
you should be offered prenatal diagnostic studies and not screening only.
