Our Laboratories provide high quality service for genetic diagnosis. The Cytogenetics laboratory performs Chromosome Analysis and Fluorescent In situ Hybridization (FISH). Primary focus of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory concerns DNA testing for genetic disease. Molecular tests often are correlated with cytogenetic results to optimize patient care by our clinical genetics team. FISH probes are utilized in diagnosis of many syndromes, such as DiGeorge syndrome, Williams syndrome and many more. Molecular genetics procedures, such as southern blot and PCR are highly specific and sensitive methods for evaluation of genetic disorders.
The Laboratories are located in the building of Technology & Research Park IV on the University of South Alabama main campus. The Laboratories are well equipped for clinical genetic diagnosis and the clinical research in molecular genetics. In addition to the fundamental equipment, the Laboratories have the state-of-the-art instruments, including automatic DNA sequencer, laser MicroArray scanner, real time PCR thermal cycler, automatic DNA/RNA extractor, thermal cyclers, and digital imaging systems for chromosome analysis and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH).
