Department of Medical Genetics (Teaching and Research)

The Department was established in 1974 and is among the first free-standing facilities of its kind in the South. Our mission is to minimize the time gap between scientific discoveries and their applications in health care.

Soon after the inception of the department, the Alabama legislature enacted Alabama Act 824 calling for " expanding programs... for genetic disorders in order to encourage the prevention of birth defects and mental retardation..."

Propelled further by the 1979 federal diseases act, our team established a regional outreach program to extend genetic services to 32 South Alabama counties. Since then, our faculty continues to participate in state and community organizations.
