Dr. Rayburn Francis Rego joins USA Health System Bringing New Technology to Mobile Region
|
 |
Dr. Rayburn Francis Rego has been appointed assistant professor of internal medicine in the division of gastroenterology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. His appointment at USA is significant because he is the first physician in our region to use a novel diagnostic tool called endoscopic ultrasound.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a procedure that uses an endoscope with an ultrasound probe at the tip. An endoscope is a medical device that is inserted through a natural opening, allowing physicians to look inside the the body. |

EUS provides physicians clearer, more accurate images of the gastrointestinal tract and surrounding organs. It is especially useful in providing a more accurate diagnosis of cancers.
Prior to his appointment with USA, Rego worked in private practice at GI Associates of St. Augustine in St. Augustine, Fla. Rego completed his internship at St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India and his residency in internal medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Conn. Following his residency, Rego completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
In addition to his work at GI Associates of St. Augustine, Rego worked at St. John’s Physicians and Clinics, a private practice group in Mountain View, Mo.; and the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains, Mo.
In 2003, Rego attended the Endoscopic Ultrasound Training Program at the University of Montreal. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and American College of Gastroenterology. He is board certified in internal medicine and in the subspecialty of gastroenterology.
Rego is now seeing patients at the Digestive Health Center, located at USA Knollwood Hospital Pavilion. For appointments, call 660-5555.
