Dr. Asad U. Sheikh joins USA Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Dr. Asad U. Sheikh

Dr. Asad U. Sheikh has been named associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and director of the USA division of maternal-fetal medicine. He joins Drs. Kathy Porter and Susan Baker, who represent the only three board-certified high-risk obstetricians in the region.

Prior to his appointment with the USA College of Medicine, Sheikh served as assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Sheikh received his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. He performed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Mich. Following his residency, he completed a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. In 1995, he completed a medical genetics fellowship at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

In addition to his appointment at the University of Maryland, Sheikh has served on the faculty at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash.; Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich.; and University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, N.Y.

An avid researcher, Sheikh has authored more than 40 articles and abstracts. He is a member of several medical societies including the American College of Gynecology, Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and American College of Medical Genetics. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics.
