Renowned Biomedical Ethicist to Deliver Goldhamer Lecture on Stem Cell Research

The University of South Alabama College of Medicine is pleased to announce Dr. Bernard Lo has been slated as the Goldhamer Lecturer for 2006.

His lecture, entitled, “Stem Cell Research: Science, Ethics and Policy,” will be held 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at USA Medical Center and presented at the Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.
“With the rapid emergence of new technology, open discourse and critical analysis regarding medical ethical issues should always be in the foreground,” said Dr. Samuel J. Strada, interim dean of the College of Medicine. “We are very fortunate to have Dr. Lo, a knowledgeable leader in medical ethics, to address these important issues with our faculty, students and residents.”
Lo is a professor of medicine and director of the Program in Medical Ethics at the University of California, San Francisco. He has served as national program director for the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics since 2001.
Lo graduated from the Stanford University School of Medicine. After completing his residency at both the University of California, Los Angeles and Stanford University, he was distinguished as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Stanford University.
A medical educator, practicing internist and author of “Resolving Ethical Dilemmas: A Guide for Clinicians,” Lo has been involved in a number of studies on numerous medical/ethical issues including stem cell research and end-of-life decisions.
This lectureship is generously sponsored by the Goldhamer family in honor of Dr. Richard Goldhamer, an anesthesiologist who served as a faculty member of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
