Dr. David Wood New Chair for USA Department of Microbiology and Immunology

 
Dr. David O. Wood has been named professor and chair of the department of microbiology and immunology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
 
Wood is a Distinguished University Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, a position recognized by the University of South Alabama Board of Trustees beginning in 2001. He has been a part of USA’s faculty since 1979.
 
During his time at USA, Wood has become an internationally renowned researcher on Rickettsial biology. His contributions have greatly advanced knowledge of molecular genetics and understanding of the pathophysiology of this intracellular obligatory parasite. His authority on this subject matter and leadership skills also led to his election as president of the American Society of Rickettsiology and of the Southeastern branch of the American Society for Microbiology.
 

Wood received his Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta Ga. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.

Wood has been the recipient of three competitive NIH grants, including a prestigious MERIT award. MERIT (Method to Extend Research in Time) awards are highly selective awards presented to a small percentage of researchers and provide recipients with funding for innovative research over an extended period of time.

Popular and respected among the medical students, the 2001 and 2002 classes recognized Wood as “one of the faculty members who had the most meaningful input into their medical education.”
