Dr. Zweifler Receives Grant Funding for Further Stroke Research

Dr. Richard Zweifler, professor of neurology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, has been awarded $93,750 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to improve the treatment of patients who suffer multiple strokes.

The current grant serves as an annual extension to a study exploring preventative therapies for stroke recurrences and cognitive decline. He and members of the USA Stroke Center are currently conducting this and seven other research trials aimed at defining better therapies for both stroke prevention and acute stroke intervention.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death and adult disability in the U.S. and European nations. Approximately 12,000 Alabamians will become victims of a stroke each year, costing the state more than $48 million direct and indirect costs.

Zweifler received his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine, interned in internal medicine at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital and also completed a neurology residency and fellowship in cerebrovascular diseases at the University of California at San Diego before joining the USA College of Medicine faculty in 1995. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters.

The December Lunch ‘N’ Learn lecture series will feature Dr. Zweifler. His lecture, entitled “Strategies for Minimizing The Impact Of Strokes”, will take place on Dec. 8, 2006, at 11:30 a.m. at the USA Medical Center Conference Room and will provide the latest information on the prevention and treatment of strokes.

The lecture and lunch is provided free of charge. Reservations are required. For more information regarding the lecture or to make reservations, please call 460-6770 or email bschiavoni@usouthal.edu.
