| MOBILE – Rigg Curtis, a clinical nurse specialist at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, has been recognized by the Alabama Hospital Association as a regional “Health Care Hero” for his contributions to health care excellence. Curtis was one of ten area hospital employees honored by the state hospital association. |
| Curtis, a registered nurse with a master’s degree in nursing, works in the Regional Burn and Wound Care Center at USA Medical Center, where he has spent his entire 19-year career. He has worked to improve dressings for burn patients, established protocols to ensure quality of care in burn treatment and has been published in national journals. |
| “Rigg’s dedication and commitment to excellence in the care and long-term recovery of a burn patient makes him special,” said Angela Duffy, nurse manager of the burn unit. “He goes beyond the workplace and continues to utilize his expertise for the good of the community.”
Curtis actively participates in the community by working with the “Fire Expo,” which educates the public on fire prevention and raises funds for burn victims and their families. He also contributes by conducting trauma outreach programs at hospitals along the Gulf Coast. |
Co-workers said Curtis is worthy of recognition because he readily goes out of his way for his patients, often staying late to teach patients and their families wound care management and giving them his pager number to be used day or night. |
Curtis was among ten southwest Alabama hospital employees recognized at the January 11 reception hosted by the Southwest Regional Council of the Alabama Hospital Association. It was one of seven regional awards presentations held as part of the association's fourth annual statewide “Health Care Heroes” contest, an effort to honor the dedication of health care workers in the state and to highlight health careers. |
The contest will culminate in February when one overall winner from each region will be recognized.
