The University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute is pleased to welcome Dr. Michael A. Finan, professor and chief of the gynecologic oncology section, and Dr. Rodney P. Rocconi, assistant professor and gynecologic oncologist.

Drs. Finan and Rocconi specialize in the management of cancers of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and lower genital tract. The three most common forms of cancer in the female reproductive tract are ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancer.

Prior to joining USA, Finan served as the residency program director for the department of obstetrics and gynecology, and chairman of the cancer committee at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. He has also had an appointment as professor in the department of Ob/Gyn at USA.  He is the first gynecologist in Mobile to perform robotic surgery.

Dr. Finan earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, in Shreveport, La. He completed his internship and residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa, and a fellowship at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.

Finan specializes in a variety of cancers affecting women including cervical cancer, fallopian tube cancer, vaginal cancer, gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, vulvar cancers and ovarian cancer. He has a special interest in ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer and robotic surgery. Finan is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Rocconi earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He remained at UAB where he completed his internship, residency, and fellowship. In addition to his clinical patient work, Rocconi has been named the second recipient of the Abraham A. Mitchell Clinical Cancer Research Scholar, recognizing a $1 million dollar gift from local philanthropist Abraham Mitchell to the USA Cancer Research Institute.

Rocconi is an accomplished researcher with more than 50 national presentations and more than 40 publications in scientific journals during the past four years alone.  He has been recognized several times for his scientific achievements, most recently as receiving the Gynecologic Oncology Group Young Investigator Award.  This award was given in conjunction with a $25,000 grant by Amgen to pursue Racial and Genetic Differences in Endometrial Cancer.

Finan and Rocconi are now accepting new patients and physician referrals. They will provide inpatient care at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center and USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital.  To make an appointment or referral, please call (251) 665-8000.
