Dr. T.G. Jackson Honored by National Premedical Honor Society

Dr. T.G. Jackson, professor in the department of chemistry at the University of South Alabama, was honored recently by Alpha Epsilon Delta, the national premedical honor society, during its 37th annual convention in Dallas, Texas.

Jackson was named a member emeritus for his more than 30 years of service to the group.

Jackson, who has been at USA for 42 years, established the local AED chapter on the USA Campus in 1980, and he remains its adviser. Over the years, he has served the national AED as president, vice president and regional director. While president, he significantly increased the number of scholarships awarded by the society, including the establishment of a scholarship in honor of Dr. Virgil Tweedie, professor of chemistry at Baylor University, for his 40 years of service to AED. Jackson joins Tweedie as the only member to be awarded member emeritus status. As vice president, Jackson planned and implemented the 33rd national convention in Memphis. It still holds the record for the number of chapters attending a national convention.

Under Jackson’s leadership, AED achieved unprecedented growth with the chartering of 26 new chapters with 29,609 new members-- more than in the previous 15 years of the group’s existence, bringing membership to more than 300,000. AED recognized its 200th chapter during the convention.

Jackson did not seek re-election at the convention, saying “it is time for younger individuals to take over the leadership of our great society.”

“We are standing on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that distant, because you raise us up, and by your great statute add to ours,” said Suzette Combs, president-elect of AED. “It is an honor to work with these giants, T.G. included.”

Jackson was surprised by his local chapter, which was selected by AED for the past two years as the Outstanding National Chapter. The chapter was permitted to recognize Jackson for his dedication and leadership for the past 30 years.

Said Jackson: “The greatest honor one can receive is to be thanked by the local students that you have been privileged to work with on a daily basis.”
