MOBILE – The University of South Alabama Medical Center, the first stroke-certified hospital in Mobile, has announced plans to host regularly scheduled Stroke Support Group meetings open to the entire community. The meetings will take place the third Tuesday of each month from 6 p.m.-7 p.m., with the first meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 19 in the USA Medical Center 10th Floor Dining Room. There will be a light meal, door prizes and an inspiring talk from a stroke survivor. Reservations are requested. For more information call 471-7752 or 471-7216.

“The primary goal of the stroke group is to provide survivors and their families with educational and social support, including opportunities to meet others who are going through some of the same challenges,” Cindy Carrigan, USA Medical Center Stroke Coordinator, said.

Participants will be provided an education folder where they can add information from each meeting on topics such as health management, healthy eating, safety/fall prevention tips and community resources.
“USA Medical Center is uniquely qualified to host a stroke support group,” Carrigan said. “We’re excited and believe that valuable information will be provided to stroke survivors and caregivers.”
The USA Stroke Center at the USA Medical Center is the first in Mobile to earn Primary Stroke Center certification from the Joint Commission, the nation’s predominant health care standards-setting and accrediting body. The certification recognizes USA Medical Center’s efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care and confirms USA Medical Center has the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving stroke outcomes.
The USA Medical Center also recently earned the American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines-Stroke” Silver Performance Achievement Award, the only hospital in Mobile to be selected. The award recognizes USA Medical Center’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
