Dr. Ronald D. Franks, vice president for health sciences at the University of South Alabama, was recently chosen by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), to serve as vice chair of the committee that reviews the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), the standardized exam used to evaluate prospective medical students at nearly every medical school.
“The MCAT is an extremely important tool in evaluating students who are applying to medical school” said Franks. “Our committee’s task is to review current exam content and make recommendations that we feel will increase the usefulness of the exam.” |
| |
Medical schools consider MCAT scores to be a significant part of their admission decision. |
The MCAT exam was first administered in 1928. Today, the AAMC administers more than 80,000 MCAT exams each year at more than 350 locations around the world. The new review marks the fifth time the MCAT has been evaluated.
The review of the MCAT is expected to take several years and is expected to be completed by 2012. Final recommendations from the panel will provide the AAMC with a framework for developing an updated MCAT and supply pre-health advisors and medical school admissions officers with better tools to help prepare students for the MCAT, and refine student selection systems as warranted. |
The AAMC is a nonprofit group representing all 130 accredited medical schools in the United States and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools. |
