"You Don't Need Another Stroke"
Topic of Next USA Stroke Support Group Meeting

MOBILE – “You Don’t Need Another Stroke” is the topic of the next South Alabama Regional Stroke Support Group meeting to be held from 6 p.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17 in the USA Medical Center’s 10th floor dining room.  The stroke support group meets the third Tuesday of each month.

The guest speaker will be Cindy Carrigan, the stroke program special projects coordinator at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, whose topic was developed by the National Stroke Association.

“A person who’s had a stroke is at much higher risk for another stroke,” Carrigan said.  “Stroke victims can reduce that risk by learning the causes of most strokes and the conditions that can put people at risk for future strokes.”

In addition to Carrigan’s talk, the meeting – sponsored by USA Medical Center - will feature a healthy meal and door prizes.  Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 471-7752, 471-7216 or e-mailing ccarrigan@usouthal.edu.

USA Medical Center is the first facility in Mobile to earn Primary Stroke Center certification from the Joint Commission, the nation’s predominant health care standards-setting and accrediting body.  The certification recognizes USA Medical Center’s efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care and confirms USA Medical Center has the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving stroke outcomes.

USA Medical Center is also the state’s first Gold Performance Achievement Award recipient for stroke care, awarded by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for meeting 100 percent of stroke indicators for 24 consecutive months.
