Mitchell Cancer Institute Physician-Scientist Selected to Help Lead Professional Organization

Dr. Rodney Rocconi |

Dr. Rodney Rocconi, a gynecologic oncologist at the University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute, has been elected to serve on the council of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, a council comprised of members from the nation’s largest and most elite cancer centers.
Based in Chicago, SGO is a national professional society representing more than 1,200 physician specialists dedicated to the care of gynecologic cancers. The organization seeks to improve the care of women with gynecologic cancers by fostering research and disseminating knowledge to raise the standards of practice in the prevention and treatment of gynecologic malignancies.

As the candidate member of the SGO’s 14-person council, Rocconi will provide leadership and support for the organization’s mission of promoting and ensuring the highest quality of comprehensive clinical care through excellence in education and research in gynecologic cancers.

Dr. Rocconi, who serves as the Abraham A. Mitchell Clinical Cancer Research Scholar, joined the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute in 2007. He specializes in the treatment of gynecologic cancers and is actively involved in both clinical and basic science research. His research is aimed at developing diagnostic screening tests as well as targeted agents for the treatment of gynecologic cancers. |

Dr. Rocconi earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He remained at UAB where he completed his post-graduate medical education, including fellowship training in gynecologic oncology. |

The Society of Gynecological Oncologists is a national medical specialty organization of physicians who are trained in the comprehensive management of women with malignancies of the reproductive tract. Its purpose is to improve the care of women with gynecologic cancer by encouraging research, disseminating knowledge which will raise the standards of practice in the prevention and treatment of gynecologic malignancies, and cooperating with other organizations interested in women’ s health care, oncology and related fields. |
