HAMMACK RECEIVES HIGHEST AWARD FROM ALABAMA HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION

USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital

Stan Hammack

MOBILE - Stan Hammack, vice president for health systems at the University of South Alabama, has been honored with the Gold Medal of Excellence from the Alabama Hospital Association. The award is the state hospital association's highest award and recognizes outstanding hospital leaders who have excelled in hospital administration.

"Stan Hammack is extremely deserving of this honor," said Mike Horsley, president of the Alabama Hospital Association. "He has been instrumental in many critical efforts to ensure quality health care for Alabamians, both in the establishment of a statewide trauma system, as well as the recent efforts to ensure appropriate funding for the state's Medicaid program. Mr. Hammack is known for his thoughtful leadership and ability to address situations from a broad perspective." Hammack was recently appointed by Gov. Bob Riley to represent public and governmental hospitals on the Medicaid Hospital Services and Reimbursement Panel.

Born in Jasper, Ala., Hammack graduated from Auburn University in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and from the University of South Alabama in 1988 with a master's degree in public administration. He began his health care career as a staff pharmacist for the USA Medical Center in 1975 and was quickly promoted to the assistant director of pharmacy position. Following various management positions, he was named administrator of the former USA Knollwood Park Hospital in 1992, administrator of USA Children's & Women's Hospital in 1997, and associate vice president and chief executive officer of USA Hospitals in 2000 prior to his current position.

In addition to his local hospital leadership, Hammack has served on the board and as chairman of the Alabama Hospital Association. He has also been active in other health care organizations, serving on the Alabama Department of Public Health's Licensure Advisory Council, its Task Force for Children's Health Insurance and the CHIP Plus Plan for Special Needs Children. He is a current member of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama Board of Directors, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Advisory Committee and a past board member for South Alabama Political Action for Higher Education.
