USA Children's & Women's Hospital Provides "ThinkFirst Mobile" To Help Children Make Safe Decisions

MOBILE – An 8-year-old wades alone into waist-deep water, even though she doesn’t know how to swim.  A teenager late for school tries to beat a train to a railroad crossing.  These actions, and other high-risk behaviors like them, are the reason the University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital is offering “ThinkFirst Mobile” to the community.

ThinkFirst is the National Injury Prevention Foundation’s award-winning, evidenced-based program aimed at helping people reduce their risk of injury by educating young people about their personal vulnerability and the importance of making safe choices.  More than 9,000 children in the U.S. die annually from traumatic injuries and about 50 percent of those deaths are from brain trauma.  Many more are severely disabled as a result of brain injuries.

“ThinkFirst is an important mechanism to reach out to the Mobile community and Southern Alabama with age-appropriate preventive education for school-age children,” Dr. Anthony Martino, USA pediatric neurosurgeon, said.  “ThinkFirst is a wide-ranging program that encompasses vehicle, sports and firearm safety.  We hope to reduce the incidence of devastating brain and spinal cord injuries to children with this educational program stressing prevention.”

ThinkFirst Mobile presents programs to children from elementary school through high school.  Students learn how risk-taking behaviors and poor decisions may lead to devastating consequences.  ThinkFirst Mobile serves Mobile, Baldwin and surrounding counties in Alabama.

USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is among less than ten freestanding hospitals in the country dedicated specifically to the health care needs of children and women, offering Mobile’s only neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, pediatric oncology outpatient center and high-risk obstetrical care, and is Mobile’s leader in births.
