Discovery & Quest

The Center of Excellence and the Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama would like to welcome the fifteen fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students participating in our Discovery program.

The program consists of classroom activities, art projects, and field trips intended to educate students from underserved communities about careers in health-related fields. Furthermore, participation in the Discovery program will build students' academic skills and will hopefully motivate them to continue their education in college.

d&qThe program began on July 3rd with a presentation by Dr. Judy Blair, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, on the importance of nutrition and exercise to good health.
The students made daily nutrition and exercise journals that they can use to record their meals, snacks, and exercise activities. They were also given pedometers to aid in tracking their daily levels of activity.

Joseph Farmer, MSN, RN, and Associate Professor at USA's College of Nursing, gave a presentation on July 7th to Discovery students about the nursing profession. He underscored the differences between nurses working in clinics, hospitals, and schools, and spoke about the different degrees a person can get in the field of nursing.

Mr. Farmer then led the students in a cardio-respiratory activity to demonstrate how their heart rates change between activity and resting states.

The presentation ended with a short question and answer session, during which the students displayed a remarkable level of interest in the nursing profession.

On July 10th, Discovery program students were introduced to the idea of art therapy, in which people who have difficulty expressing themselves in words can use drawings, paintings, or sculpture to identify and express their feelings.

The students were encouraged to make a plaque for someone special, and to decorate it with impressed textures from leaves, sea-shells, and other interesting found objects.
